The nationwide search of PPGL 2018 for the best players in the country ended last weekend at the grand finals held in Glorietta. For Tekken 7, two players from Cebu, another two from Cagayan de Oro, and four from Manila qualified for the grand finals and coming out on top is none other than the kid wonder of the Philippines, Alexandre “PBE|AK” Laverez.

PBE|AK performed magnificently in his top 8 matches. In the first round, he rendered our very own UFTC.Gogoy’s Xiaoyu play absolutely ineffective. Following that, he had a closer match against his teammate Djamille “PBE|Naturelover” San Juan whose Lili continues to be threatening in the highest level of competition. These two wins sent PBE|AK to the winners finals where he faced off against another teammate Andreij “PBE|Doujin” Albar. PBE|Doujin started with his usual tournament pick Kazumi which was effective somehow against PBE|AK. The usual compact play however was stopped by PBE|AK’s usage of Shaheen’s magic 4 which was faster than most of Kazumi’s pokes. Eventually, PBE|Doujin felt it necessary to switch characters, and went for the Shaheen mirror match which unfortunately ended in his defeat.

In the grand finals, PBE|AK met with PBE|Doujin once again who just finished defeating PBE|Naturelover in a serious yet also friendly match. Remembering his early match in the winners finals, PBE|Doujin decided to switch things up and showed his versatility with characters by picking Paul Phoenix. This was a bold pick considering Paul used to be PBE|AK’s character, but even with years of experience helping him PBE|AK had a tough time surviving the match. After losing the first game, PBE|Doujin once again switched characters and picked Feng Wei. This new pick combined with PBE|Doujin’s compact unorthodox style proved troublesome for PBE|AK, making him drop one match. Despite this setback, PBE|AK chose to continue with Shaheen and managed to overcome PBE|Doujin’s Feng Wei in the following match, and continued to defeat the return of Kazumi for the championship.

The rest of the results are as follows:

Champion: PBE|AK
2nd place: PBE|Doujin
3rd place: PBE|Naturelover
4th place: UFTC.Gogoy
5th place: CGP|Legion.Haji, Don Saitama
7th place: PBE|Bully, Wong

Congratulations to Alexandre “PBE|AK” Laverez for winning PPGL 2018! A huge thanks as well to Globe and MET Events for the successful event.
